GIMP is good, but challenging if you need to design for both digital and print gamuts. I know you're currently looking for typography stuff, but it seems you don't know many of the open-source options out there. This isn't to say the others are bad, but some of them do not have the typographical features that I find useful in book typography such as small caps and alternate figures. EB Garamond, Fira Sans, Jost*, Montserrat, and Spectral are great too. Personally, if I was forced to use three from the list above, it'd be Alegreya, Source Pro, and Vollkorn. If a typeface has both (P/D) it means it works for both mediums. I'll list what medium these typefaces work well in with either a (P) for print or a (D) for digital-meaning it works well for on-sceen use, but not print.
